Jagua Blue gets a wider audience with Codex approval

Article

Jan 16. 2025 - 12:55PM

Codex approval is highly relevant worldwide as an international organization founded by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It sets Standards and Guidelines for additives in a wide range of food and beverages. Codex Standards influence the everyday health of consumers when they are applied by industry and are used to guide food safety authorities and food businesses operators on good practices and safe maximum levels of additives, as well as contaminants, pesticides, and veterinary drug residues.

The decision by the Codex Alimentarius Commission clears the way for the use of Jagua blue in 21 food categories such as dairy-based desserts, fruit preparations, flavored milk drinks, confectionery, fat-based desserts, and cereals.

Explore the official details here: GSFA Online Food Additive Details for Jagua (genipin-glycine) blue

For many countries, Codex Standards and Guidelines are the basis for national legislation. In some cases, especially in LATAM, APAC, and MEA regions, countries refer directly to these Standards or let Codex Standards prevail unless local regulations are to be followed. Thereof, products with Jagua blue can now be sold in countries such as Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, South Africa, Kenya, and others.

The whole approval process of Jagua (genipin-glycine) blue at the Codex Alimentarius took around four years, including safety evaluation of this new vibrant blue by the JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives).

The US Food and Drugs Administration (US FDA) approved Jagua (genipin-glycine) blue in December 2023, joining other territories such as India, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico where it was already approved for use. Oterra has been selling the pigment using the brand name ‘Jungle Blue’ in these territories.

Derived from the Jagua fruit, or huito fruit, in Colombia, Jagua blue offers a naturally sourced, high-strength blue pigment for food categories.

Oterra uses jagua fruit in its Jungle Blue formulation. It is pH stable in all common food applications, and it does not flocculate, precipitate, or change shade in acidic environments.

With its ability to withstand thermal processes, Jagua blue is also perfect for high-temperature applications such as extrusion. It can be blended into the dry mix before extrusion or dissolved into the water added into the extruder barrel. Either way, fantastic blue cereal can finally be produced.

It is easy to combine Jagua blue into dry powder blends because it dissolves quickly in water, giving a strong and even color. Simple agitation is enough to ensure full dissolution. This makes Jagua blue perfect for instant frosting and icing mixes where only a little water is added before it is all mixed and the product is good to use.

Jungle Blue does not just deliver brilliant blue—it also combines with yellow or red pigments to produce vivid green and purple shades.

High-tech partnership creates a natural blue color for a greener tomorrow

Press Release

Jan 15. 2025 - 9:58AM

Arctic Blue is the first product from the partnership between leading natural color producer Oterra and Iceland’s VAXA Technologies.

“At Oterra, we are constantly seeking new natural color solutions. Our partnership with VAXA Technologies is a prime example of our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” says Luc Ganivet, Oterra’s Chief Innovation Officer.

VAXA’s production in Iceland is in the sweet spot between Europe and the US, close to the markets that use the most spirulina in food and drink products, and where Oterra has its main manufacturing sites, to offer an unbeatable security of supply compared to other sources.

“By teaming up with this high-tech startup, we are able to produce spirulina-based natural colors using a state-of-the-art carbon neutral cultivation process that's much closer to Europe and the US than most existing suppliers,” adds Luc Ganivet.

The high-tech production facility is next to a geothermal power plant that provides 100% clean energy, waste heat and carbon dioxide to VAXA’s bioreactors where the spirulina is grown 24 hours a day.

There is minimal loss of water from the closed system that has a significantly lower land footprint than traditional open pond systems. The carbon neutral cultivation process uses only 1% of the water and land compared to traditional open pond systems.*

Processing, packaging, and transportation add some carbon dioxide emissions back into the equation, but initial analysis by Oterra suggests that it still has up to 40 times lower carbon emissions than the company’s conventional spirulina product.

With its unique sustainability profile, Arctic Blue can help Oterra’s customers reach Scope 3 targets by reducing their value chain emissions.

The spirulina algae used in the system is the same as in open pond systems, but the production process also solves some traditional issues with conventionally grown spirulina, while keeping its benefits.

“Arctic Blue has a neutral odor, contrary to algae grown in open ponds,” says Lotte Jeppesen, Industry Marketing Manager for Oterra. “It is also easier to mix and dissolves faster, which makes it better for handling. However, it keeps the common characteristics of spirulina such as the same vibrant blue shade and a high color strength, while legislation and labeling are unchanged.

The use of spirulina as a color in food and beverage new product development is gaining popularity, according to Innova.** And the growth in use of spirulina in new product development is ahead of Brilliant Blue/FD&C Blue 1 artificial color. The most common use is in Confectionery (48.4%) followed by Bakery (15.9%), Desserts and Ice Cream (11.6%)***

Oterra’s ambitious GHG emission reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative

Press Release

Dec 14. 2023 - 12:56PM

This is currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. With this important milestone, Oterra reflects its overall commitment to widespread change for the better, recognizing that the well-being of people and the planet are interconnected.

Just two years after the establishment of the company and despite multiple key acquisitions, Oterra submitted targets in April 2023 committing to reduce absolute scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year, as well as to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 25% within the same timeframe. After a rigorous review, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated these targets. Oterra, the world’s largest supplier of natural food colors, has once again shown its resolution to responsibly care for the earth and the ecosystems that provide sustenance and well-being.

“I am thrilled about the SBTi validation,” said Mads Dehlsen Winther, CEO at Oterra. “Climate change is the most urgent issue of this generation, and we are committed to doing our part even in a difficult economic environment. I am also proud of the thorough materiality assessment we’ve completed. Without it, we wouldn’t have the solid baseline we need to be able to track future progress towards sustainability objectives efficiently and transparently.”

“Today, we welcome Oterra’s science-based targets consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C,” said Luiz Amaral, Chief Executive Officer of the Science Based Targets initiative. “The ambition of Oterra’s targets is aligned with the need for the global economy to rapidly cut emissions. Oterra is setting an example for the rest of its industry, and I urge others in its sector to set their own targets too.”

The SBTi drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set science-based emissions reduction targets. It is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

“SBTi validation is the gold standard for companies serious about addressing climate change.
